6 Health Conditions Linked to Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a severe chronic skin condition characterized by the appearance of thick, rough, and inflamed crusty patches on the skin. Otezla is a medication known to treat psoriasis by limiting swelling within the affected cells. However, patients with psoriasis may also be more prone to developing certain health conditions due to the inflammation and insulin response associated with psoriasis. The list below includes some of the diseases that are associated with psoriasis:

1. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a group of diseases, any of which can restrict airflow to the lungs. A study conducted on a group of 60 people in Israel concluded that, though the exact relationship is not understood, there is a link between psoriasis and COPD. Therefore, it is worth noting that some drugs prescribed for psoriasis can affect the respiratory system. For example, methotrexate, an immunosuppressant drug used to treat psoriasis, has been linked to lung damage. It is important to consult your doctor or nurse about the potential side effects and precautions you should take if you experience any such side effects before you begin treatment for psoriasis.

2. Psoriatic arthritis
Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a condition that often coexists with psoriasis. Like other types of arthritis, it causes joint pain, stiffness, and inflammation. According to experts, approximately 33 percent of people with psoriasis might also develop PsA at some point. In fact, there are many similarities between the two conditions. Both conditions are disorders that cause inflammation in the body. Approximately 40% of people who develop PsA have family members who have the same condition or psoriasis.

3. Polycystic ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
PCOS causes a hormonal imbalance in female patients, causing them to produce more androgens. An androgen is a male hormone that is responsible for masculine features in men. Androgens inhibit the ovaries’ ability to produce eggs. According to experts, PCOS and psoriasis are similar in that they both cause insulin resistance, which can also lead to obesity in both cases. Both psoriasis and PCOS cause swelling in their respective patients. Moreover, psoriasis and PCOS frequently coexist—if you get one of these conditions, you are more likely to also develop the other.

4. Lymphoma
Lymphoma is a cancer that damages the lymphatic system, spleen, stem cells, or thyroid glands, all of which assist your body in fighting infections. Psoriasis is caused by an overactive immune system, which can consequently cause lymphocytes to grow and multiply rapidly, increasing the risk of cancer. If you have psoriasis and are 65 or older, your chances of developing lymphoma are incredibly high.

5. Heart disease
According to research, individuals with severe psoriasis are more likely to develop heart disease, whereas patients with mild cases are less likely to have heart-related diseases. On the other hand, some psoriasis medications, such as Methotrexate, are known to be heart-healthy.

6. Depression
Psoriasis is a bothersome disease that can cause anxiety due to its physical effects and the stigma surrounding it. Patients with psoriasis are likely to be self-conscious about their bodies and appearance, leading to anxiety and depression. If you find yourself worrying excessively, it is important to speak to a doctor or a licensed therapist about seeking treatment.
