Best diet for gout patients
Gout is a form of arthritis which is a condition of painful inflammation of the joints. Gout is characterized by the buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints causing extreme pain and inflammation. The most commonly affected part of the body is the big toe with the fingers, knees, heels, and wrists also being affected in some patients. Uric acid is naturally formed as a result of the body processing a chemical called purine. Purine is naturally found in the human body as well as in certain foods. Therefore, a person with gout should be careful to adhere to a gout diet that avoids intake of purines which in turn would limit the formation of uric acid crystals. Gout can be aggravated by being overweight and a gout diet should also help in achieving a healthy weight and be supported by maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Foods to avoid on a gout diet
- Organ meats
Kidneys, brain, liver, and sweetbreads are foods that trigger gout and are to be totally avoided. - Fish and Seafood
While certain types of seafood such as shellfish, anchovies, tuna, and sardines are very high in purines, others are good for health. So, instead of eliminating seafood from one’s diet entirely, a gout patient should be discerning in the type of seafood that they choose to eat. - Beer and Alcohol
There is a higher risk of gout attack associated with the intake of alcoholic beverages, beer being the worst trigger. A moderate intake of wine does not increase the risk for a gout attack. One is advised to completely avoid alcohol when suffering from a gout attack. - Refined carbohydrates, sugar, and added sugar
Though sugar does not have purines, it does indirectly cause a gout attack. Avoid fructose, sugar, and beverages with added sugar. Honey and natural sweet juices are to be avoided. Refined carbohydrates are also indirect triggers for elevated uric acid levels and are best avoided. - Yeast
Yeast and foods that contain yeast are to be avoided.
Foods to add to a gout diet
- All vegetables and fruits
Vegetables and fruits even if they have moderate purine content are found to be safe for gout patients. Cherries have been found to be especially beneficial in a gout diet. - Whole grains, legumes, and nuts
Gout patients can enjoy all whole grains, legumes, and nuts as these food items won’t affect uric acid levels.
- Vitamin C
It has been suggested by some studies that Vitamin C might have the effect of lowering uric acid levels. - Coffee
A moderate intake of coffee has a beneficial effect on uric acid levels.
- Meat
Meats and poultry other than organ meats can be consumed in moderation by gout patients.
Make sure you consult your doctor for any recommendations as he/she might customize a diet according to your condition.
