How to apply eyeshadow like a professional

Eye makeup can take your look to the next level. You can change your look with a few easily available products and methods. However, sometimes, if you use the incorrect method, it could turn out to be quite disastrous. Right from choosing a primer to the color and brushes, you have to understand the basics of how to apply eyeshadow.

Eyeshadow adds dimension and depth to the eyes. The key to applying eyeshadow like a professional is all about the colors you choose and blending techniques. Once your basics are right, you might want to experiment with a new and fancy look like smokey eyes, glitter halo, or cut crease.

Application tips

Step #1: Apply eyeshadow primer
To begin, you need a clean and fresh base. Prime your eyelids so that your eyeshadow lasts longer and looks perfect. This is a basic step to prep your lids for the next course.

If you don’t have an eyeshadow primer, you can apply a concealer. Top it up with translucent powder to set the concealer. This creates a make-shift primer.

Step #2: Apply a nude/natural base color
Use a blending brush to apply a nude color shadow on your eyelids. You could also use any color that is closest to your complexion and blend it well.

This is a crucial step as it maximizes the intensity as well as the longevity of the colors you are going to use in the next step.

Step #3: Add color to the crease
Apply a matching or complementing color shadow to the crease with the same fluffy blending brush. This color should complement the color you have already applied in addition to the color you are going to apply next. This also works as a transition color. Add color to the lower line of the lash and blend it properly, especially in the outer corners.

You can also contour the eyes at the crease and use a darker eyeshadow shade.

Step #4: Add a dash of color
Now apply the real color of the eyeshadow, emphasizing the color on the outermost corners of your eyes. Extend the color gently past the crease to create a smoky effect. Apply the same color on the lower lash line as well. Once again, use a fluffy blending brush you can create the dramatic smokey-eyed look.

Step #5: Don’t forget the gradient
Now, apply the same nude shadow used in the second step. Use it to blend out the edges of the color to create a softer and subtler effect. The nude color enhances the look and helps all the other colors blend seamlessly.

Step #6: Define the lower lashline
Using a kohl pencil, define the lower lashline neatly. Ensure it smudges well to achieve that gorgeous smokey-eyed effect.

Step#7: Wear false eyelashes and apply mascara
Add a pair of false eyelashes for a bigger, bolder, and glamorous look. Following this, you can apply a coat of heavy mascara on the lower eyelashes to create a balance. If you are not a fan of false lashes, you can skip it and only apply mascara as well.
